What happens during the 1st trimester?

The first trimester of pregnancy spans from week 1 through week 12, representing a crucial period of growth and development for the fetus. During this time, major organs and systems begin to form, leading to significant changes within the mother's body as well.

Common symptoms experienced during the first trimester

  • morning sickness

  • fatigue

  • breast tenderness

  • frequent urination

  • mood swings

Developments

During the first trimester of pregnancy, significant developments occur in the growth and formation of the embryo. The major milestones during this stage include:

  • The formation of the neural tube (which later develops into the brain and spinal cord)

  • Basic facial features such as eyes, ears, and nostrils begin to take shape

  • The heart starts beating and can often be detected via ultrasound around week 6

  • Limb buds form

  • The embryo takes on a more human-like appearance as the first trimester progresses.

By the end of the first trimester, all major organ systems have begun to develop, laying the foundation for further growth and maturation throughout the pregnancy journey.

What is Relaxin?

Relaxin is a hormone produced by the corpus luteum in the ovary and the placenta that plays a crucial role in pregnancy. It helps to soften the cervix and pubic symphysis, allowing for easier childbirth. Relaxin also relaxes the uterine muscles to prevent contractions too early in pregnancy and may aid in the implantation of the fertilized egg in the uterine lining.
